Assistant Professor Derek Clewley

Dr. Derek Clewley is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University, where he also serves as the associate director of the Duke Center of Excellence in Manual and Manipulative Therapy. He holds a PhD from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from Shenandoah University. Dr. Clewley is board-certified in orthopaedic physical therapy and is recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. He has over 40 peer reviewed published manuscripts. His primary research interests include dry needling, manual physical therapy, and pain sciences. Dr. Clewley has extensive experience in developing continuing education, residency, and fellowship post-graduate training programs. He is also the associate editor of BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders and serves as a board member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. In addition to his academic and research roles, Dr. Clewley is an educator and mentor in the Duke University Doctor of Physical Therapy program. He has a passion for inspiring clinicians to reach their potential and is actively involved in teaching orthopaedic manual therapy across various levels of professional development.
