The immune system is coming into focus as being a key player in the experience of pain and fatigue. 

 

This presentation will explore the role of the immune system in managing inflammation and how pro-inflammatory states, following injury or an infection (such a Covid-19), can lead to a sensitized nervous system and result in pain and fatigue. The clinical implications of managing patients with sensitized neuroimmune systems, who present with joint pain, will be discussed.

Director, The Train Pain Academy Jacqui Koep

Jacqui Koep is a rehabilitative exercise and pain management. physiotherapist. Pain Management focuses on understanding the subtleties of how the nervous system and the immune system can develop changes in the way they respond to input and set of danger alarm signals felt as pain. She is focused on combining pain management and rehabilitative skills to empower patients and help them return to valued activities and improve their quality of life. Jacqui is one of the directors of the Train Pain Academy which focuses on teaching medical professionals about pain and she teaches courses on Pain management tools; the use of exercise to manage pain and how to communicate effectively with your patient. She completed her undergraduate PT training at the University of Cape Town and her MSc Med in Pain Management at the University of Edinburgh in 2007. She is the Chairperson of the South African Pain Management Physiotherapy Group and is a lecturer and examiner for the Sports Physiotherapy Group.
